Title: A Day at the Gupta King's Court

Scene: The grand court of Chandragupta II (Vikramāditya), decorated with rich tapestries, statues, and graceful architecture.

Roles:

Chandragupta II (King)

Prime Minister (Mantri)

Court Poet (Kavi)

Scholar (Vidyapati)

General (Senapati)

Merchant (Vyapari)

[The scene opens with the king seated on his throne, surrounded by ministers, poets and scholars.] Chandragupta II: Welcome, learned friends. Tell me of your work. Kavi, have you composed anything new?

Kavi: O King, I have written a poem celebrating our kingdom. It praises the beauty of the Ajanta Caves, the life along the Ganga, and the bustle of our markets. May I present it?

[The poet recites the poem, and the court listens with appreciation.]

Chandragupta II: Well done, Kavi. Vidyapati, what news from your studies of the stars?

Vidyapati: Your Majesty, I have been observing the movement of planets and noting patterns. Our teacher, Āryabhaṭa, has guided much of this work. I believe our knowledge of astronomy will help in navigation and agriculture.

Chandragupta II: Excellent. Senapati, what of the frontiers?

Senapati: The borders remain quiet, Your Majesty. Our alliances hold and there have been no large raids. People live and work without fear.

Chandragupta II: Good. Merchant, tell the court about trade.

Merchant: Your Majesty, trade with Rome, China and regions around the Mediterranean is flourishing. We export textiles, spices and ivory, and import glass, gems and luxuries. This brings wealth and new ideas to our towns.

Chandragupta II: Continue to support trade, learning and the arts. This prosperity benefits all.

[The court agrees and the scene ends with polite applause.]
